Spring is just around the corner and I am so excited about some of the trends seen on the runway for Spring 2014! One of my favorites is the pastel trend. While one of my favorite colors to wear is black and I love my neutrals, adding color into your wardrobe can be so much fun. These are some of my favorite picks for spring. I made sure to choose some affordable pieces, but I could just not resist adding those baby blue Giuseppe Zanotti pumps and I love those Valentino sunnies. I’m sure there will be similar styles popping up at more affordable locations this season.

Two more trends seen on both the runway and street style are crop tops and midi skirts. And although the mention of crop tops may remind you of belly baring Britney Spears circa 1999 with “Hit Me Baby One More Time”, don’t worry! The more recent crop top trend is much more wearable and less risque, mostly because the tops are slightly longer, normally hitting just above the belly button and are best paired with skirts or pants that are a little bit higher waisted. Click here if you’d like to see how I wore one of my favorite crop tops.

I have yet to search out the perfect midi skirt, but petite ladies beware! This trend may be more difficult to pull off because skirts that hit below the knee have a tendency to cut us off and make us look shorter, so find that perfect heel and make the trend more wearable.

Take Me to Paris

I love a good beret. Finding one that doesn’t make me look like there is an awkward mushroom sitting on my head… well, that’s a different story. I was lucky enough to find this beret with a cute little pom-pom on top of it from H&M. Wearing it makes me feel like I’m back in the city of love. Paris was everything I had ever dreamed of and I can’t wait to go back and visit one day. The architecture is so intricate and beautiful, they food is scrumptious, and I could just listen to people speaking French all day. One of these days, we’ll go back. 🙂 But until then, whenever I’m having those yearnings of going back, I’ll pop on my little beret, eat a croissant, some creme brulee, a few macarons, or a couple cream puffs. Wait a minute, this sounds dangerous, maybe I’ll just stick with the beret. 😉

Playing with Peplum

Since peplum resurfaced the fashion scene circa 2012, I knew I had to get my hands on one, maybe two, ok fine, maybe I have three. Although at first, your boyfriend/husband may be thinking, “Why is there a skirt on your shirt…?”, don’t fret. This piece has the ability to make your waist look smaller and add some curves where they may not exist. Not only that, it has a magical way of hiding our food babies after a delicious meal. 😉 Peplums pair wonderfully with a high waisted pencil skirt for a sophisticated look. But sometimes, I like to pair them with a more edgy outfit for that added feminine touch. And hey, this particular peplum really does add that feminine touch with the giant heart cut-out on the back. So if you’re feeling like you want to dress up for Valentine’s Day without going with the obvious red or pink, maybe heart cut-outs are the way to go. 🙂

If you’re on the petite side, be careful about where the smallest part of the peplum hits on your body. You want it to hit at the smallest part of your waist for the most flattering effect. Any higher and it’ll look like you stole a child’s dress, any lower and you’ll be elongating your torso and shortening your legs. Hope you have some fun with peplum!

In my opinion, you can never have too many LBD’s (little black dresses). Although I am making a conscious effort to add more color into my wardrobe, I will always love wearing black. I would describe my style as feminine with a little bit of edge. I love girly details, so naturally I love skater skirts, high heels, bows, and have always had an affinity towards lace. Mix that up with some leather or studs, and I am a happy girl.

Urban Exploration

Roaming around the city finding new places to take photos for Inspire Me, Mon Ami has been a great way for us to explore the city. Although Matt grew up in the Lower Mainland, this is his first time living downtown. So although he knows the areas well enough to navigate around, he doesn’t know about all the hidden gems in the area. It’s been great exploring together because it allows us to dig through the heart of the city and find those cool boutiques, unique street art, Mom & Pop restaurants, and all the other treasures that only the locals know about. I like to think of it as… city spelunking? I think I just like the word spelunking.

spe·lunk·er  (spĭ-lŭng′kər, spē′lŭng′-)

n.

One who explores caves chiefly as a hobby; a caver.
I mean, there is probably a word out there for what I’m talking about, but I’m going with City Spelunking. 🙂

On this particular day, urban exploration took us to Kitsilano (known to the locals as Kits) and down to W 1st Ave. This was where we discovered ta little juice bar called Krokodile Pear. Something drew us in and after tasting the Capilano (smoothie with cucumber, celery, beet, apple, pineapple, lime, blended with avocado and spinach) we were sold on this place. In fact, this is the day we decided to do a 3 day juice cleanse. Juice cleanses aren’t for everyone but I definitely had to try it before forming an opinion. To be honest, I couldn’t make it past day 2. I’ve decided my love for food is beyond my control. I would do a 1 day cleanse every once in a while, but that’s probably my limit. Either way, I will be back for that Capilano smoothie!

I’ve really been enjoying blogging lately. I find that it’s a great creative outlet for me and I am finding more and more how awesome and supportive the blogging community is. But lately, I think I’ve been overthinking it. Seeing my favorite blogs out there like the  AMAZING  Wendy’s LookBook , Gary Pepper Girl, Sincerely Jules, and Hapa Time makes me feel like I have to be some sort of fashion pioneer in order to put together a decent outfit.

This got me thinking about why I’m even blogging about fashion in the first place, because in no way, do I think I am the most fashionable person out there. I don’t own every trendy piece of clothing out there or even think I’m the most creative at throwing things together, but what I can say, is that I ENJOY fashion. I love how unique fashion is to each and every person out there. There are no defined parameters of what you should be wearing in order to be fashionable. Everyone sees it a little bit differently! There is no need to compare because everyone is entitled to their individuality and their voice. It’s all about how you feel inside the clothes. So, I decided… Instead of trying to overthink it, which would likely result in me wearing something hideous that I would regret in about a week from now, I would go for what intuitively felt right. I may conjure up some inspiration from something I’d seen lately, but I wasn’t going to think too long about it. Because let’s be real here… No one has time to sit in their closet for an hour every day trying to pick out the quintessential “I want to look good but not like I’m trying too hard” outfit. So don’t!

Pick the Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy outfit that makes you feel good! Because if you feel great in what you’re wearing, exuding confidence automatically makes you fashionable.  So, out of my fashion rut I came and went for easy peasy. I grabbed my ever-so-soft gray oversized V-neck tshirt and some skinny black pants for comfort. Then to amp it up a little, because I was feeling a little more fierce that day, I threw on my white blazer, a colorful necklace, and a pair of pumps and obviously wore my glasses because I had just had a moment of clarity. 🙂

By the way, I am still loyal to my Revlon Lip Butters and have them in too many colors, but I am owning it. I wore the color Sugar Plum in these photos. It gives me that great, “She might be wearing lipstick but I can’t be sure. Maybe her lips are always moisturized and naturally that pinky mauve color” kinda look. They’re not. 😉

I am a hopeless romantic. I still cry every time I watch The Notebook and don’t get me started on P.S. I love you.  There is something about the combination of black lace and red lips that screams romance to me. I like this outfit because it can be worn in the office but also has the versatility to be worn to a romantic dinner at the end of the work day. I love putting together a nice outfit without spending too much and it’s so do-able! My trick? When shopping, I search for affordable pieces with added embellishments. I love the embellished collar of this blouse and the studs along the waistline of the already beautiful lace skirt. Both pieces are from Forever 21!

To top off this look, I donned my skirted trench coat from H&M. This coat is perfect over skirts like this and is sure to make you feel a little more lady like.

Thanks for reading!
